This is known as the Lunchtime Poll. from LeDeluge's blog

So: You're at your favorite waterhole. Drinking, laughing, having a good time. Your gf, bf, wife, husband, date (whatever) is suddenly being hit on at the bar. You can see it happening, but you can't quite hear what is being said. There is no real bodily contact and your instinct tells you there won't be. Dry hit. Some fucktard looking for a lay. You're sitting approximately 20 feet away and have a clean path to do as you will.

What do you do? This is along the lines of the "May be controversial" post. Based on an actual, albeit trivial, event from my life some months back. I'll tell ya what I did after I see some answers :)

P.S. Suppose I'll add a follow up: If you were the one being hit on at the bar, what would you expect to be done? I can answer this as well.

Assuming your GF, Wife, Whatever is NOT Satanically minded the usual response to a man reacting in a manner akin to jealousy is to play it down. Either because they don't want to make a scene, see you get hurt, or the other person. Women find it flattering (as do men) to be hit on and it merely feeds the ego.

If you trust your significant other asking them what took place might not be far from the ideal solution. If it was in fact flirtatious and they are respectful they would not want you to feel upset by it.

If you were drunk when it happened, stereotypes be damned there is nothing between you and him but air and common sense. Seeing what you do to him for merely flirting people will think twice about even making eye contact. And when you are bailed out of jail she may or may not be waiting for you when you do.

Hindsight will reveal all.

Partner being hit on; I am all about the little tests of day to day life so I would give it a few moments to see my partner's reactions before making a move. After a short time based on what I see I may introduce myself to the person hitting on my partner while still watching her response. After the introduction it is all based on if I want the situation defused or to make a point. There is a fine line between looking like or offering trust and giving them enough rope.

I am being hit on; Normally I have no intent on picking up anyone or making long term contact with them at a bar. This being said I would still be polite to the flirt without playing the game and if the conversation lasts I would offer to introduce her to my partner (who is most likely watching me like the above example). My ego is not inflated and I don't take the bait from a few flattering words as seduction is a tool and not often what it seems at first glance.

Partner being hit on: I'm sizing that person up, maybe I'm interested in encouraging it.

Me being hit on: I don't partner up with people that aren't familiar with my personal ideals. I'm not worried about it, that person may be doing a bit of their own sizing up to encourage it.

I've done this one before and it's pretty funny, if someone's hitting on my boyfriend I walk up, do the slow creepy once over look of the chick, hit on her for a minute, then invite her back to our place. Usually they freak out and leave really quickly because they aren't gay.

If I'm being hit on, chances are that I have not noticed and Paul is watching in the corner and laughing, a lot.

All good responses. I rarely post anecdotes, but it is interesting to see different contexts added.

We rolled as followed: My current gf went to the bar. She was hit on almost instantly. I was indeed about 20 feet away. Function is the key. You watch for the inevitable signal to the bartender. Approach the bar slowly as the gentleman (in this case) is about to order her a drink. She then introduces you and says "Sure and one for my boyfriend". In most cases, this will work. There are many variations on this particular parlor trick. In an effort to save face, the gentleman bought us both drinks. A bit of chit chat and you return to your table. I would do this with any female of any acumen, however. You either get free drinks or a punch in the face I s'pose. I liked the odds :)
